What types of tasks does GFS perform – part 1
Global Functional Safety (GFS) performs many types of tasks – the priority of them are based on Functional Safety (IEC 61508 and IEC 61511). When a Safety Report (Column 3 according to the Seveso Directive) needs to be updated every 5 years, this is also Functional Safety.
In this case, GFS’s task is to facilitate (and write) a qualitative Risk Assessment based on both the HAZOP and What if methods and a quantitative Risk Assessment based on the LOPA method, respectively. These are the first 2 activities of the Functional Safety life cycle, namely “Hazard and risk assessment” and “Allocation of safety functions to protection layers”.
It is the Customer’s task to find the very best and professionally skilled team, who should participate in all of the workshop days, as well as plan and book the calendar in collaboration with GFS.
Also done in collaboration with the Customer, the framework, dividing the process into parts that are suitable for HAZOP and parts that are suitable for What if and last but not least: setting up the Nodes and Guide Words (for HAZOP).
Throughout most of this upcoming autumn, workshop-days has been put into the calendar as well as dates for submission of the qualitative and the quantitative Risk Assessment Report, respectively, which the Customer can then use in the updated Safety Report.
In the aforementioned task, there are 2 plants that are in many ways comparable. But as the Facilitator, it is extremely important to keep an eye on the details and not be tempted to “copy/paste”. It is our experience that process plants are rarely as simple and straightforward as they may appear on paper!
